It certainly isn't as good as it used to be or maybe we are just getting pickier in our advancing years.

Burger patties from Fresh market smothered in onions: we will have fresh green beans with a bit of lemon juice, butter and garlic, glazed baby carrots and cottage cheese with fresh sliced peaches and strawberries.

The last time I ate there the service was surly, the buffet table was a mess and they were dealing dope out the back door. That was over a decade ago. It's been a loss of a really decent franchise.

Today we're finally celebrating Bachelor Son's July birthday. I've always thought I was lucky to have our boy over the summer. That way I could always take all his rowdy little friends out to a park to celebrate.

It's been a special time for him since it coincides with the town's annual celebration with parades, ball games, carnival, beer garden and dance. I used to buy carnival ride tickets and take the party there. He and his friends used to participate in the Kiddy Parade and every year it was a big deal planning what he would wear and ride. It's also a time of reunion when people return to visit which is nice. He sees old friends.

He planned the menu with a few of his favorites: Reuben dip and crackers, ham, pea and fennel fettucine Alfredo, grilled chicken breasts, cheesy broiled garlic bread, "garbage" salad with bleu cheese. That is such a man's meal. No quiche to be found.

I can't wait to see the look on his face when he sits down to eat. Whenever a meal is made especially for him I can see the echo of his little boy's look of satisfaction and excitement flicker across his face. I love that!

And he will eat all that heavy food on a hot summer day then take seconds after the rest have all quit eating and, miracle of miracles, not gain an ounce. Forty-three but the metabolism slow down hasn't kicked in yet, lucky guy.

We are not birthday cake people so dessert is mint chocolate chip ice cream pie with a chocolate cookie crust and frosted with ganache. Whipped cream and hot fudge on top.

(I just realized yesterday that I have planned eighty-eight birthday parties for those two kids!)
