I think it is a ground up meat product that has been reformed into a log for easy slicing. And that is not real cheese on those sandwiches either.
I notice in their commercials, their sandwich is always big and tall, with pink roast beef and yellow cheese. What you get is a smashed sandwich with some grey meat slices with orange cheese sauce.
No, not really. It's like lunch meat--if you go to a deli and watch what they're slicing, it's these big logs of reconstituted meat. It's not sliced off of a turkey breast or beef roast.
They mechanically take the meat off the bone then spin it with water in a wash machine, add gelatin, pour it in a mold, then when it sets slice it off.
You can buy that wafer thin sliced meat on the lunch meat aisle. It ends to come in little bags and is rather cheap. Leo's or Buddig, are the two brands I know.
I'm guessing that Arby's is real meat, just pressed into a block and shaved thin for the sandwich (I don't eat there so I haven't seen what they are serving) Most likely, the meat has salt added and possibly msg to enhance the taste. The thin slices get fluffed up when they are put onto the sandwich to visibly look like you are getting more meat.
I've got nothing against Arby's. I know people who eat there and like it. At least it is not deep fried, so there is that healthier aspect to it.
It's just deli meat. I bought some BEAUTIFUL london broil roast beef the other day at the deli counter. I was very impressed, as this is the store brand, not something like Boar's Head. It put Arby's to shame.
That said, I actually don't mind Arby's roast beef sandwiches. They are some of the least damaging fast food out there, I think, if you don't get cheese on it, and it tastes decent.
I have a love for Arby's Classic Roast Beef sandwiches but have always been curious as to it actually is made up of.
It doesn't look anything like other roast beef.
I've been eating Arby"s roast beef sandwiches since about 1975. I've made it to age 81, so I guess it won't kill you very quick. I think I'll go get one for supper tonight.
