I can't search on my phone so I hope this isn't a duplicate thread.

I got a used bread machine for $5. The money supports missions so it was worth the gamble.

No instructions but I found a recipe and decided to try it today. Pistachio olive bread. Yum.

Well the knead cycle was energetic but I ignored it until about 10 minutes later it was still going but it was warming up. I could smell the yeast. It's as if it was stuck on knead. I got a great idea and stopped it, pulled the dough out and set it in the sun to finish rising. Then I tried a different setting (instead of basic). The knead cycle seemed to go forever - I was ready to drop the dough back in once it switched but it didn't.

Seems to have about a 4+ minute cycle then, after at least 5 or 6 minutes I look and there's another 4+ minutes on it. (I did observe the minutes changing)When I tried other cycles I got error codes.

Is there a way to totally reset it?

I had a bread machine once that I loved but we downsized to nothing and went to Hawaii for a year or else I'd still have it.

My bread is baking in the oven.

Gee. Why didn't I think of that?
Most of the trouble shooting that I found involves baking tips, not technical info.
My default is to contact the mfr service dept but it looks like Pillsbury doesn't make these anymore? Or they were bought out?
I'll admit to not making too much effort before asking c-d bread machine experts.
How long is it supposed to knead? Anyway I got a fairly decent loaf even if the sliced olives were pulverized by excess kneading.

Just let it knead for 8-10 minutes, then stop it manually and bake. Check the result.

I don't use a bread machine, but I have baked over a thousand loaves of bread (many years of baking 2-3 times a week), from basic recipes, to fancy stuff like baguettes, brioche, and ciabatta, to no-knead bread (which is all I bake these days excepting some special recipes). I have not kneaded apart from a couple of folds, I have kneaded for a minute two, kneaded for 5-10 minutes, and I have even, just out of sheer curiosity, kneaded for the better part of an hour.

I always gotten edible bread.

My Grandfather once told me, "As long as you don't bake a doorstop (forget the yeast), you will get some bread to eat."

I use a bread machine and for a basic loaf, here is the cycle it goes through:

It kneads for 9 minutes
Dough rises for 20 minutes
Bread machine beeps. This means it’s time for you to add raisins, nuts, etc. if you are using those.
Second kneading 15 minutes
Second dough rise 25 minutes
Third dough rise 45 minutes
Bake for 1 hour
Total time for a 1.5 pound loaf is 2 hours and 53 minutes.

I love my bread machine. The reason the second and third rise are not listed as one number is because some types of bread have different “third rise” times so they broke it out, I guess.

You're very welcome. Seems the Pillsbury models are difficult to find manuals for but here is a link to the manual that came with mine. If you look at page 11 has the time tables for all of the cycles on the machine. I've read that most machines regardless of brand operate pretty much in the same way so maybe this will help you.

The knead cycles on my bread machine are 10-20 minutes, depending on the size of the loaf and the type of bread I'm making. Have patience, Grasshopper! And good luck.

Thanks for this. I had patience and it worked. I made pumpkin cranberry bread today.
Thanks to everyone! Especially for the manual.
