I was stationed in Germany twice (Heidelberg, Erlangen) and fell in love with German food. Some of my favorites were of course Bratwurst, especially the ones you could get on a cold day from a food vendor. They usually would accompany a hard roll (brotchen), and hot mustard. I was also fond of Currywurst with curry ketchup, probably Germany's most popular fast food. Schwenkbraten (German pork steaks) was a standard fare at most German festivals. Schnitzel, or hunter style schnitzel was also a favorite of mine in Germany. I often make it at home.

My dad's gf is German (she was in the Army too) and we have a pretty authentic German restaurant here www.waldhorn.us but I really don't care for German food. Potato pancakes and beer are good though.

Pommes frites with graded white cheese was very popular with the American soldiers in Europe. I was stationed in Germany back in the 80's, and I don't remember the pommes frites coming with mayo. In Holland mayo was preferred over ketchup.

Yeah, we had another one here that was here for 50 years...ownership changed once or twice from one German family to others, but they went under a year or two ago. waldhorn does very well though. It helps they offer a good selection of American food too.

don't know how it was back in the 80's. It also depends which part of germany. Curry ketchup over fries is also very popular. And red beet salad.
