Whole Foods isn't the only place overcharging in NYC. Even places like McD and Wendys overcharges.

They are free to charge whatever they wish, nobody is required to shop there especially in NYC.

It's fine to overcharge but they must be accurate on what the price per unit (weight/volume etc).

I only go to whole foods for the bulk items.

Didn't need a investigation to know this. Just do some comparison shopping.
Sprouts also has their weights off. Every time I go I have to get the manager to calibrate. The scales at the bins don't match the scales at the checkout!!!!!

You know who never fails me??????
WALMART.

Yet another thread about the evil empire of Whole Foods. It's always funny to see such outrage expressed by people who never to shop there. Eh, whatever.

Seriously, how could someone buy a small tray of shrimp and be overcharged by $15. and not notice it?
Their bulk spices turned out to be a rip-off for me. I pay less buying the spices in individual containers. Once I realized that their scales were off, I stopped buying their produce and most things that require weighing unless it's salad that's already marked and priced as is. Even then, there are still chemicals used to preserve those veggies amongst the air they use to pressurize it for shipment and storage.

I said it once, I'll say it again-

There is nothing special about shopping at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's.......

Both of those stores are for the pretentious people who like to
think others are jealous of them wasting a lot of money, lol

In reality, the rest of us are very smart w/ our hard earned cash

Do I now get to return the favor by disparaging people who shop at Aldi and The Dollar Store? And...please...anybody who's anybody around here shops at Tony's. (That would not include me, BTW.)

Like I wrote earlier, it's always funny to see such outrage over Whole Foods expressed by people who never shop there.

Wow. it must really suck where live and encounter people like that.

Around here people look and act the same and they shop at Aldi or Whole Foods. It isn't a matter of how special or being jealous. It's about sourcing foods that they want to eat. Some prefer organic, some prefer only local, some prefer discount and yet others prefer certain brands. I personally find great deals in the bulk foods at Whole Foods, Fresh Market and Earth Fare. Example in point: I like those wasabi rice snacks. At Walmart a bag cost $5. At the bulk section, I get the same amount for $2. Same with spices, So no thanks, I rather spend my hard earned cash on good food and good deals. If that makes me pretentious and special, so be it.

I agree with this post,,,because I can post studies on gmo's and organics,,,that quash half the hype,,, and half what we think is b.s.

here's my beef with whole foods....

if it were a new car dealer,,it would sell only Volvo's

not everyone can afford a brand new Volvo,,,,but the people who can,,,can talk them up as well as any salesman.... and they are perceived as "SAFER vehicles,,,, you can feel guilt free driving a Volvo because it is safer than most other cars on the road..

we have a family gathering,,,,, someone in the family has a brand new Volvo,,, she starts bragging it up,,,going on and on,,, and no one wants to hear this

think im nuts??

any traditional supermarket ,,,does its best to sell to ALL/EVERYONE even the poor,,, they have sales where they have features where the store makes nothing,,,but prices are great ..

what percentage of whole foods sales go to people on foodstamps???????????????????

im willing to bet less than 1 %

while traditional supermarkets its 30-40%

so, the feel good shoppers that shop at whole foods..... are supporting a store that's out of reach for our poorest,,,

think im nuts?

I have heard it first hand,,, from whole foods shoppers,,,they don't have to shop with the scumbags...

and this gives w.f. a huge advantage to overprice to the blind faith shoppers,,,,,

going back to the Volvo's ,,,that dealership makes twice as much on a Volvo,,,than the dealership down the road.. selling a ford focus..

if you are in a position where price isn't the biggest motivator for shopping,,,thats great,,,

but , im tired of hearing the virtues of whole foods,,,when half of it is b.s. (in my opinion)
and they are continuously in the news for violating country of origin policies,,,,organics/local,,,all the feel good words

Whole foods IMO is part of a bad trend where apparently, food has become a glamorous luxury for the upper-class 'beautiful people' who seem to think they are on a higher level than the rest of us peons. I think WF has way too much money & has become way too powerful and have lost their way so to speak. And this latest news about them proves it. Not a huge surprise.. the few times I've been there in the past I always felt ripped off.

I remember when 'health food stores' were crunchy little mom & pop places where hippies & other assorted fringe types went to get food that was simple and unprocessed. Now all those places have been pushed out or bought out by the almighty and powerful WF.. which is like a food theme park or country club or for the rich and glamorous. But sorry, if I'm gonna spend $80 on groceries I want to leave with 8 bags, no 1 or 2...! That's just common sense!
And you can have high standards for health and shop at regular grocery stores. The only thing special about going to WF is that they spend WAY more on glamming up their stores, have lots of luxury items (which is more of a gimmick.. do you REALLY need that stuff..?!) and, you're definitely getting ripped off.
Personally I would rather go to a small, quiet store where I'm not being assaulted with advertising .. it's completely obnoxious. And having so many food items shoved in my face, every inch of my field of vision, that it nearly makes me sick! But then again I have more of a socialist, utilitarian idea of food.. that healthy, affordable food should be available to everyone, and it has more to do with seeking out the healthier stuff and making good choices.. (ie, being responsible for your own health..) AND being able to do it on a strict budget. I would rather shop someplace where they spend their budget mostly on the food and not on advertising and fancy expensive signage. Because then YOU the 'consumer' ends up paying for the markup..!!

And as for organic foods.. I no longer can afford them or justify spending the extra money on them. I used to believe that they were better for your health, and of course the premise of 'less chemicals = healthier' sounds believable. And for years I believed as it became more available, it would get cheaper. But now I just feel like it's all just a marketing scam to get more money out of sucker consumers. You can eat a very high quality diet on a budget.. and I feel you are better off buying 10 items of fresh produce at a regular store, than 1 or 2 items of fancy organic stuff.
Besides- where are the long-term studies that prove organics (or, shopping at WF??) leads to 'less doctor visits'..? I don't believe there are any real studies that prove this! (If there are, I'd like to see them!) It seems to me that what makes the difference is overall lifestyle factors, eating lots of fruits/veg/less processed stuff, etc.. exercise, no smoking, no exposure to major environmental toxins, etc.. but much of it seems to be genetics and luck. In terms of cancer, aside from those basic factors, it seems to be kind of a random thing.
My point being.. I feel like we've been duped into thinking 'organic foods will keep me cancer-free' and I just don't see he real proof. Tons of people eat non-organic and they'd fine- very healthy & they live a long life.
And they say it's better for the environment, which makes sense...but if you can't afford it and you're a very frugal person, then it's a moot point, isn't it..?
