On Valentines weekend I plan to prepare a roast duck dinner for my boyfriend. The recipe I have is from a book he gave me for Christmas: "Downton Abbey Cookbook." The recipe calls for the duck to be roasted plain and served on a bed of homemade applesauce, with currant gravy on the side.

What would you serve as sides with this dish? I was thinking brown and wild rice with pecans, but I've made that for him several times previously. Should I stick with that since he likes it, or would you suggest something else for a starchy side?

What vegetable dish would you suggest I serve with this duck?

I'd love to hear some new ideas. Thanks!

Maybe sliced baby potatoes with diced onion and red bell pepper - all pan roasted with some oil (maybe some butter, too?)

Oven roasted baby carrots (a bit of oil, garlic salt and cracked black pepper)?

How about stacked scalloped sweet potatoes?

Or sweet potato biscuits.

Warm beets salad on greens.

Any of the cruciferous veggies would go well. Or red cabbage.

Maybe a simple sorbet for dessert with a splash of liqueur.

Be sure to let us know what you decide on. And pictures are always welcome.

I make something very similar to this and I always get positive feedback on it. I agree it might be a good accompaniment to Duck. What I do is very similar to your linked recipe, but instead of using mozzarella, I use equal parts sharp white cheddar and gruyere. I also add some toasted candied pecans on the top and just a touch of brown sugar as well as cinnamon between the layers for added sweetness.

I wondered about the mozzarella. I think your choice of a sharp cheese would go better with the richness of duck.

Roast potatoes and roast pumpkin. All a matter of taste, but I personally would not have anything with cheese to accompany duck.
