I accidentally bought the former at the Dollar Tree instead of the latter at the discount grocery where I usually shop. Yuck! Large, slimy noodles to which none of the rather tasteless "broth mix" adhered. So much worse than the latter and for the same price...
But just my opinion. I understand this is an age-old question. Which do you prefer?
AND, the worst way to prepare them are per package instruction. Don’t make a soup out of them(yuck). Boil noodles in however much water you want. Drain noodles(colander) and place in a bowl. Add a pad of butter. Don’t overdo it. This adds richness. Then add the seasoning pack to the noodles 1/3 at a time stirring in.
I can't tell any difference in the noodles. I don't use the sauce packet.
One of the local stores puts flats of Maruchen on sale, very cheap, about 10 cents per packet. I wouldn't expect good spices for that price but the noodles work well mixed with veggies and my own seasoning.
Marachuran is I believe an American brand, Nissin is Japanese but majority of the US stuff is made for Americans since Nissin ramen is pretty good in Japan and they do have some premium stuff that is only available at Asian grocers.
