I've been told that in the western part of Pa and Ohio nobody eats any particular food for luck or tradition. I wonder if the midwest doesn't either.
Indiana is midwest and we eat boiled corn beef, new potatoes, carrots and cabbage together in my area. New potatoes to bring in the new year, carrots to have lots of coins, cabbage for green money but I don't know why with the beef.
I know corned beef and cabbage is big on St. Patrick's Day but I just don't like that cut of meat. Jewish corned beef with cole slaw or as a reuben with sauerkraut is delicious.
What other traditions are there for St. Patrick's Day, other than a glass of Beamish or Guinness? Fish and chip, maybe?
I've heard that people eat hopping John. I seem to remember hearing that some people drink mimosas or Bloody Marys on New Year's Day, but I'm not sure why that comes to mind.
I'm from California. My grandmother always made black-eyed peas for the New Year, my grandparents were originally from Oklahoma. I was just talking to a friend from Ohio who said they always have Saurkraut.
Seafood and Blackeyed peas. Usually I add some greens to the list, but the grocery store only had some sorry looking greens in stock, and I'm not fond of the frozen or canned versions.
I am wondering what some of you all traditionally eat and drink this time of year. In my house, Pork and Sauerkraut is the first thing you eat on New Years Day (no breakfast). It is good luck for sauerkraut to be the first food you eat after the new year. I usually just get a pork roast an a bag of sauerkraut and crock-pot it on low for 7 or 8 hours.
On New Years eve, my German sister-in-law has got us started on fondue. Not just chocolate, but all kinds of meat fondue, etc. We are starting to continue that even if we aren't with her on NYE.
New years eve is junk food night in our house. A bunch of snacks and we break out the Wii.
New Years day we usually have a ham with sides. Probably not going to bother this year though, thinking about fondue too.
