"Fresh" turkeys are only bought on a farm.

Or maybe a small independent meat store that has access to a Farm.

Exactly what we do. I also buy a frozen turkey at Thanksgiving and stash it in the freezer for cooking up later in the year.

These "fresh turkeys" that you buy in the grocery store have been dead, a long time.....you do realize that. Frozen turkey`s are actually fresher. The turkey is frozen right away. The "fresh turkey", has a lot of steps to take, before it gets to the store.

I think it takes time to defrost is also a problem. We bought one solidly frozen today for $7, this is cheap meat for January. We bought another non frozen turkey from a Traders Joe, I was able to get one for 13 lbs, normally I would select around 11-12 lbs, but not this year, no more kosher turkeys either.
