you can't make this crap up. What lawyer thought he'd have a chance with this? This should be thrown out of court and the plaintiffs should be required to pay the fees for the court to do it.

It is one of those frivolous lawsuits that occur in a society where there are no penalties for filing them If this country had a "loser pays legal fees" rule, these cases would not see the light of day.

An attorney's take:

I love their rolls!

Do they still have a baking facility in Hawaii?

What is happening in this case is the suit is not being made by the state of Hawaii, but by a consumer advocate. Think about it when you buy your "made in USA" flag from China.
I dont think it says anywhere that they are Made In Hawaii, implied or otherwise. Its no different than buying Old El Paso tacos, or frozen Belgian waffles. Its a recipe, not a place.

Exactly. Haven't read the link but did someone really think they were buying something made in HI and shipped out to the mainland? For what, $3-$4 for a package of 12 rolls. Wowzer, people be dumb!

In Hawaii, this type of bread is called Portuguese sweet bread, not Hawaiian bread.

Kind of like "what do they call Chinese food in China?"

The guy would have been much better off going after all the American bakeries that sell French bread and Italian bread.

I believe the actual bakery location is listed on the package. Also, the rolls were originally made in Hilo, Hawaii. So that's where the name comes from. Frivolous lawsuit.

King’s Hawaiian Bread is a variation of pao duce, a sweet bread brought to the islands by Portuguese immigrants.
Here is a recipe.
