Popularity of fried-chicken sandwiches at big chains is part of the problem
Add chicken to the list of products in short supply these days. Bloomberg reports that soaring demand at fast-food restaurants has resulted in a poultry crunch across the US. The Bojangles chain reported a "system-wide shortage" of chicken tenders this week, while industry behemoth KFC says it is just managing to keep up with demand for its new chicken sandwich.
There is plenty of chicken in the grocery stores and I haven't noticed a huge price increase. Grocery prices on everything have gone up, but chicken hasn't gone up any more than anything else.
Supply chain for restaurants is different than the supply chain for the grocery store. When there was no chicken in the grocery stores, the restaurant supply still had tons of it (in 40 pound boxes). Maybe we won't see a shortage at the grocery store..
Every year it's another meat. First it was beef, then pork, now chicken. It seems every time something is priced reasonably, here comes a shortage and prices skyrocket and don't come back down to pre shortage levels even when there is an abundance of it. Could that be just coincidence? I don't think so.
Nope. We tried to order wings at a restaurant known for their wings, this weekend. They were out of them. Said they were hard to get now.
