A couple of years ago my mother's huge deep freezer finally died. I think my parents bought it at Sears in 1972!! (That's when they built stuff to last. That American-made freezer was as strong as a Sherman tank.)

Mom was finally forced to get to the bottom of it and clean it out after it died. Probably the worst thing she found was a couple of catfish my dad and I caught probably in 1982 or 1983 when I was a kid? She refused to clean them or cook them at the time, so she wrapped them up and buried them in the freezer in the garage.

She didn't even attempt to defrost or cook those 40-year-old catfish. Too scared of food poisoning.

RIP Deep Freezer
1972 - 2018

Dinner last night was rib steaks labeled Sept 2019. They were lovely. I'm pretty sure that the primal was $2.95 a pound and I remember buying two of them because it was such a nice bargain, and then cutting them up and putting them in the freezer. I'm getting near the end of them and will miss them when they are gone.

We finished off an elk that the last of it was 5 years old. Unfortunately, all gone now.

There is pumpkin and yams (for dog food) from last October, but that will be gone before the new crop of yams and pumpkin are available. Also, still two turkeys from last Thanksgiving. One of those goes onto the smoker next week. I'll try to get both turkeys used before the next grocery store turkey wars, where I normally buy five turkeys.

One small tier of my wedding cake.
Old superstition, save it forever and your marriage will flourish. If it gets thrown out or destroyed your marriage will suffer the same.

My marriage and the cake have survived successfully since 2001, 3 relocations, and numerous power outages!!

There's no telling... I TRY to "rotate" food but that doesn't always happen. I'm pretty sure there are things in the spare freezer that are many years old.

A holiday ham at the bottom of the chest freezer. It was a gift from my builder and hence, is as old as the house. I suppose when I figure out what to do with bulk ham I will have a plan for it.

Made me look! It's either some bags of cranberries or a pack of chicken thighs.

I really have no idea. We have a 21' upright, replaced in 2016, so I suppose there could be long-forgotten items in there that are 5 years old. We did some recent organization to make room for spare ribs on sale, and found some items to throw out 2-3 years old.

I'm going to add this (because of a few other comments in this thread): there are no forgotten items in my freezers. I know what is in there and I know where it is located. There is a filing system of sort so that I can find things. Even the stuff that has been in there for over two years. I know what it is and where it is located.
