Thank you both! We're not near a Market Basket, but there is a Wegman's 2 towns over that we've been meaning to try, so we will be sure to try a sandwish while we are there. Bedford isn't close enough to make it worth going for a sandwich but one of my best friends is in Somerville so maybe the next time we are heading there we will swing by - thank you!!!!

If it's anything like the Wegman's I used to go to, it will "blow your mind"--they almost literally have everything there. (Altho I never got one of their sandwiches, their deli meats were always very good). Also, are you near a Whole Foods?
Somerville--there have got to be a few good-to-great sandwich places there--have you tried Yelp? And next to Cambridge--if you can go to Bartley's Burger Cottage in Harvard Sq.--best burger place I ever tried (& they have all kinds of other things).

In the NJ/ PA burbs, I'd say Wawa or ShopRite (they are shockingly good). It used to be Jersey Mike's, but after franchising, it's not the same. I found that the local pizza/ sub shops aren't very good, other than Tastee (they have 3-4 locations).

Well, once a year isn't so bad. I hate the drive back up to Baltimore; I did it for so many years. And no mustard or pickles for me - yuck.

I guess Culver's for hamburgers. So far so good. They taste like hamburgers did when I was a kid.
But around here our independents aren't faring well.
We used to have one which did the world's best Reubens, potato salad and onion rings plate. And an old time bar that served juicy, piled high roast beef sandwiches. A third, steakhouse, had a ham and turkey on toast broiled with cheddar sauce which was very good. Andy's special was beef and all kinds of "stuff" on a hoagie that was addictive.
But in this college town nearly everything is now sports bar food, mostly variations on hamburgers and fries.
If I've got a hankering for something special I do better to just make it myself.

Ask for light oil. They can be a little heavy handed with the oil and vinegar, so I always let them know light on the oil so they're not making 6 passes across the sandwich with the oil bottle.

Last time I was in a Subway she was so busy chatting with her coworker half the sandwich got the oil and the other half got the vinegar.
Daughter's a chef and I've watched her build a sandwich or two. Everything goes to the edge of the bread and fits perfectly. With these assembly line kids it's hit and miss. That was a miss. Never went back.
I'll do it at home just the way I like it.
Cooking is an art, not a factory product. When I can find someone who knows how to make a sandwich it's a joy.
I actually think I'd rather skip a meal than pay for something poorly made.

Lets see...for a decent sandwich, I'd have to drive about 400 miles (round trip).
For a half-decent sandwich, about 40 miles.
Just some crap slapped into bread with a bit of lettuce n top, about 6 miles.
Ain't no such thing as a decent sandwich 'round here, unless I make it myself.

Just about any Deli local here (mom pop shop).
My favorite is a place in Seymour, CT called John's Deli (Rocky's Deli). Look at the size of this beast:
$4.75
