I usually buy bananas that are partly green. The store where I bought some last week had only all green or very yellow. I chose the green ones. After a couple of days I tried one and found it had a very thick peel. When I tried a piece, it was almost tasteless and felt like sawdust. They don't have a sticker. What do I have?

I would also guess plaintains. Try cooking one.

Yes, plantains, you need to cook them, ripe or not.

To enjoy plantains, leave them on the counter until they turn black. Then, chop off either end, run a knife down the length, remove the skin, slice on a bias in 1/2 in slices, and fry them up in a combo of butter and olive oil. Yum!

I've only eaten plantains as cooked / fried. Plantain chips with salt are good. Still a mild flavor, but that's fine.

Not true.

Ripened plantains can be eaten raw.

Plantains:
(Green) Cook before you eat
(Yellow) Cook before you eat
(Yellow turning black) Cook before you eat OR peel and examine the plantain.

If the plantain is dull and dry you need to cook it. But if you find the plantain to be glossy and moist you can eat it like a regular banana.

(Black) Plantain should be ripened to eat any way cooked or raw.

Or lightly coat with oil and bake in the oven. Just as good and less greasy.

For the record, there are many bananas that do not taste very good until they appear to be overripe. We eat a lot of Thai bananas each month. In my opinion, they taste better when they are almost black. I have had to keep my DW away from throwing them out or freezing them when they are that black.
