I might be one of the first people to have eaten at Panera. (Not quite, but close enough. ) I've been going there off and on for about 30 years--even before it was called Panera. It was originally the St. Louis Bread Co. As the name suggests, it started in St. Louis, MO, and then opened a few restaurants across Missouri. After they became a larger national company they ditched the St. Louis in their name and became "Panera." But in St. Louis they still use the original name for their first stores.
Upscale type place...soccer moms, old people, white collar, etc..people who would not be caught dead in an Arbys
Well...I guess it's all relative. People don't necessarily go and hang out at Arby's. They typically just grab their food and eat. And the Arby's in my town has the same people you'll see at Panera.

Used to be? as in how long? 6 months, two years, 10 years?
I mean... a Filet O'Fish used to be $2. You can bring it home and catch the latest episode of Friends...
I used to eat there but, after investigating the food and the ingredients, never have again. I think people are under the impression they cook all their foods on-site and everything is very healthy but, unfortunately, that's not the case. It does taste better than the usual fast-food places though.

Don't agree with that at all. Upscale? Because they don't generally put them in the ghetto?
And yea, if you go to just about any restaurant when most people are working there will be old people there... because they are retired. And since when does old people = uppity?
And what the f is wrong with Arby's? I don't know a single soul that thinks "I'd never be caught dead in Arby's". People don't hang out at Arby's because they don't have Wifi. It's a business model. Panera, like many places, wants you to bring your laptop and hang out... maybe you'll spend more money there.
They serve more than just sandwiches. Some people like a side of bread with their soup or salad.
I love bread with soup. My point was that Bread was an option as a side for a sandwich, which already has two pieces of Bread. In addition to an apple or chips, how 'bout a choice of cole slaw, a side salad - anything but another piece of bread.
I ate there once like 10 years ago. One and done. I don't like their bread or overall processed "healthy" food.
All prepared food is processed. I consider them to be fast food and for fast food it's relatively healthy (obvs most of the food does contain a lot of salt, but they do use real ingredients) way better than McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell, Chick-fil-A (they use MSG in all of their foods).
For those who say Panera Bread is expensive it's not.... if you use their app. They always give out freebies to concern number of visits. There is also always a promo code $5 off $20 or more. 2 people is about $15-20, which is not bad.
Haven't been in a year or two, because Panera is no longer on my beaten path.
But when we used to go, I always loved the broccoli cheddar soup in a bread bowl. Probably way too many calories, but yummy.
