Our company can’t come, so we will scale back. Turkey breast, instead of a whole one. Roasted Brussels sprouts instead of green bean casserole. No squash, no creamed onions, one pie.
We will still have all the important stuff, like stuffing and mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberries and sweet potatoes. Drinks and yummy hors d’oeuvres. We don’t need no stinkin relatives to have a fun day.
Heh. Made me think of my dignified English teacher mom with your last sentence, gentlearts. That never failed to get a shocked laugh! Here's another one in a recommendation for turkey breast for a small crowd:
One year I had the butcher debone the breast and pound it flat. Then I rolled the stuffing in it, tied it and baked it that way.
I remembered that when something didn't go well for Mom she'd say, "They tore out my heart and stomped that sucker flat."
Have 'em bone your turkey breast and stomp that sucker flat. Then enjoy with or without the stinkin' relatives.
At the eleventh hour, my son decided that we should have a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. We're baking a large chicken, it's brining, stuffing/dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, and green beans. We may have a salad before. We baked the pumpkin pie this evening. I'm exhausted from the prep.
Followed a recipe for a no bake pumpkin mousse pie. Wish they would have looked it over before hitting the proverbial publish button. In the mixing for ingredients it says sugar but in the other end mentions brown sugar. I went with the brown sugar. It's in the refrigerator for a double 3 hour chill.
Butterball thawing in the fridge.
The rest I believe I've already mentioned.
We're having a smaller dinner thanks to Covid. Some family are recovering and quarantined and won't be travelling this year.
The turkey is smaller, not much bigger than the capon we have for Christmas. Just under 8 pounds, half the usual size.
Pa dutch potato filling. Stuffing( or dressing), Cope's dried corn, cranberry relish, cole slaw, pepper cabbage, butternut squash, maybe peas. No greenbean casserole this year. Rolls and butter.
Pumpkin pie for dessert. The Pa dutch have a seven sweets and sours tradition so that explains the pepper cabbage. Its a feast, really.
Nephew smoked a turkey. Sister made gravy, dressing, cranberry salad, cranberry chutney, brandied yams, and chocolate pie. Friend brought rolls, cookies and whipped cream for other desserts. Sister-in-law made broccoli, cashews, apple, pear, cranberry and red onion salad with honey yogurt dressing. I roasted vegetables and made pumpkin mousse.
We had an excellent thanksgiving
I had my annual 3 peas ( with gravy)
The turkey was awesome
I got a .49lb cheap supermarket frozen turkey
Told everyone it was local organic and they all remarked
How much better it is than store bought

I used to hide the peas in mashed potatoes when possible.
