1 hour.

In this area, long waits are common at good restaurants. To avoid extensive waits, I make reservations whenever possible. However, I really love trying new restaurants so I don’t mind waiting an hour, if I have to.

Same here. Went to a nearby town with the ever-popular "walkable downtown" during Summer 2020. They'd shut down part of a main street so that there could be outdoor seating for the restaurants that lined those blocks.

There was a 45-minute wait at the place we'd set out to go to, so we said, "no thanks" and tried a different one a few doors down, and it was great. Different cuisine, but we were happy and went back there again.

If I'm hungry, I'm not waiting 45 minutes just to sit down, plus you know that likely once you're in, service might be haphazard and/or you are rushed through the meal to get you out so that the next group waiting can get in.

45 minutes to both questions -- but that only applies to dinner or weekend breakfast/brunch when I have plenty of time to spend.

For lunch, if there is more than a 10-minute wait, I'll go elsewhere.

Years ago, we used to go to a breakfast place that always had long lines. We'd wait an hour or more.

I'll wait if they say ten minutes, and I'll get annoyed if it runs into 15 or 20. There are plenty of restaurants, and I can always cook at home.

If it's someplace we really want to try, we'll make reservations and/or go on an off day or time to minimize the wait.

Weirdly, I had a dream last night that we'd been seated, but waited an hour for our food. Finally realized there was no sound from the kitchen, and left.

Depends on my time schedule. But no longer than 45 minutes. (Or, the place is REALLY special.)

I would say about 45 minutes to a hour, depending on the situation. A lot of places now just ask for your phone number and will text you when the table is ready, so you can walk around the immediate neighborhood if you’re lucky enough to be in an area that has a shop or two nearby.

Usually when you are waiting 45 minutes or so, the other places in the neighborhood also have waits so it’s kind of like by the time you end up getting on and off another list, you would already have been seated at the first place. I went to one fairly well known place recently and had to wait 30-45 minutes. That place was pretty remote, so by the time you got back in your car and drove to some other place, you’d definitely be seated at the first place.

On the other hand, when you get to well over an hour, there’s no reason why you wouldn’t be able to find some other place to offer seating earlier even with a drive.

At some places that are really buzzy and have long waits, it often works to try them at an off time. Rather than dinner on Saturday evening, do a late lunch on Saturday or dinner on Wednesday. You might still have to wait, but it's usually less.
