In a prior thread, you guys convinced me to keep our butter on the counter instead of the fridge. Great idea - thank you
I'm using a standard porcelain butter dish with a porcelain top. It gets greasy on the outside, and I'm just waiting to drop and break it. The stick of butter inside gets gloppy looking after we've used some of the butter. It's not an airtight container.
I've read about butter bells. Care to share your pros and cons?
In Summer, I use regular "china" (as porcelain) coffee cup. Fill it with butter, pressing down to avoid air bubbles, leaving about 1/4 off the top. Then fill it with cold water, to avoid contact with air. Air is the enemy of butter, because it oxidizes the fat and makes it spoil.
Works fine with me. No need for fancy bells
The rest of the butter (I buy 1lb blocks) is kept in the fridge till I need to refill the cup.
(When outside gets cooler, and so is the kitchen, the butter is kept on the counter, in a butter dish, without water.)
I've never had butter go bad, and we leave it on the counter all the time, in a regular butter dish. Lack of soft butter could be viewed as a declaration of war in our house. (me)

I use a water surround butter boat - the bell gets too messy - kind of same idea to keep it soft but keep from melting
The water in the boat warms/cools the pottery in order to keep butter at a speadable stage. I don't think it does anything to keep it fresh.
The butter is still exposed to air that spoils it.

Right, if you just take out a stick at a time, and use it fairly quickly, then the butter hasn't enough time to spoil...
I used a butter bell for exactly the amount of time it took for me to get tired of loading it. Maybe used three times and swiftly donated to the thrift shop. Now I use a Fiestaware covered butter dish. It works fine and before I put a new stick of butter in it, I run it through the dishwasher.
Do you leave the butter on the counter or in the refrigerator?

Never had it spoil - salted butter should last at least 7-10 days as long as not melted and keep lid on when not in use. I wash the dish out a couple of times a month.

What about unsalted?
