Is there a reason cone filters are thicker than basket filters? I have coffee makers of both types and have always wondered why the cone filters are so much thicker and about three times more costly.
Professional baristas and coffee snobs say that you're supposed to use very finely ground coffee in a cone filter. Almost like an espresso grind. (Use a medium grind in basket filters.) I'm assuming the cones are thicker so they will catch most of the fine coffee silt, particles and dust. They're probably more expensive because they use more paper to make and the extra step of gluing the seam closed.
That is most likely correct. I do use a coffee grinder and a chart that is included in the instructions indicate a finer grind for a drip machine with a cone filter.
