I would have either researched prior to the visit or ask to look at the menu once I got there - if it was out of my budget - or taste - then I would uh - leave.
Just get up and leave...no need to embarass yourself. I find that many high priced restaurant post their menus just outside of the establishment and many times if no prices are listed or it states "MARKET PRICE"...that might be a clue to get out of there.
Get up and leave. Maybe with a few bucks on the table for the server. But I usually don't eat at restaurants where you sit down and look at a menu. The menu's usually posted on the wall.
You walk into the restaurant.you have no idea how expensive it is until you see the menu. But you can't afford it. what would you do?
I have done it FIVE times in the past three months.
One place had all these "specials" posted in the $8-12 range. When we walked in, all the entrees were $20+ and the specials were for lunch.
One place was out of three of the first five menu items we asked for.
One place received great reviews on Yelp and Chowhound but I was not ready to drop $35 pp for lunch in Duluth.
One place we looked at the menu just to find that the prices were outrageous for the menu items.
I wish we had a law like they do in Quebec that would require ALL restaurants to POST their CURRENT menu with CURRENT pricing publicly in front of the entrance.
