I went to wallyworld and stocked up on Lenders bagels. (on sale people-good price) and wanted to know if I can freeze them in original packaging or should I put in freezer bag?? Also, has anyone noticed a difference in taste when this has been done? Also, how to dethaw-in fridge or countertop?? TIA
You can freeze just about anything except mayonnaise and raw eggs, and of course nothing whatsoever in glass containers.
From decades of experimenting, I almost always defrost for 24 hours in the fridge, just to be sure all the molecules rearrange back to the condition in which they belong.
But bread products (incl. cakes, cookies) can defrost on the counter because their construction has lots of air holes and the products don't change molecules very much while frozen.
Most products require TWO LAYERS of covering for freezing -- such as your Lender's bag, or plastic wrap, and then a freezer bag sealed over that. The double layers protect the product from freezer burn, from drying out, and from absorbing odors from other foods in the fridge or freezer, and from the light odor produced by the self-defrosting process. You can regret not double-bagging; you will never regret double-bagging anything.
You should never store any bread products in the refrigerator. Freeze them or room temp. The refrigerator ruins breads. The only exception I've found is Tortillas and Wraps which can stay in the refrigerator without changing texture, too much...
As someone said, make sure your bagels are sliced.
You can freeze them right in their bag. No need to defrost them. Just pop them in the toaster / toaster oven when you're ready to use them.

you can definitely freeze them! If they aren't sliced already, you may want to slice them first to make things easier when you thaw them!
Yes, I too slice them before freezing them.
