Well, what immediately came to mind was when I tried to make "Bittersweet Chocolate Truffles Royale" The situation was anything but sweet! Directions: bring cream to boil, add chocolate, butter, mix till melted. Freeze mixture until firm enough to handle, about 1 to 2 hours. with teaspoon form mix. into small balls, freeze again 20 min. dip each ball in coating of melted chocolate.
so, i followed the instructions but that part about freeze mixture till firm enough to handle, and using a teaspoon to shape into balls....Wasn't happening! I tried and tried and froze and refroze as it softened.
Let me clarify....I was trying to condense the recipe a bit...The recipe said chill in freezer until firm enough to handle, about 1 to 2 hours. I did that but when I tried to form the balls, the mixture was just sticking too much, from one spoon to the other. when I tried to use my hands, it was even worse because the mix was getting too soft. Disaster!!!! Maybe I didn't chill long enough, and it was too soft to start. Yikes. I am sure by the end I was to frustrated to get anything done with it! Boy, now I really have to give this another go to try to figure out how I went wrong!
Most of our mishaps have been of the minor variety, thankfully, but we've had one or two that we still laugh about.
Way back in the day, when the spouse and I were first together, I told him about using cornstarch in gravies and sauces as an alternative to flour. He was interested in my description, so one night when we were fixing broccoli with cheese sauce as part of supper, he decided to try using cornstarch as a thickener.
Unfortunately, either I did not sufficiently emphasize or he did not hear that cornstarch is a lot more effective than flour, and that much less is needed to achieve the same result. So he mixed in two or three tablespoons-full of cornstarch with the cheese sauce.
The result was not a sauce at all; it was a solid mass. And it bounced if dropped on the floor. We tried feeding it to our cats, one of whom was fond of cheese, but they used it for a hockey puck instead. And we ate bare broccoli that night.
I am just forever burning things, I start something to cooking but I am usually doing numerous things and the next thing I know it is burned. I remember having to throw a pan away because I could not get the burned food out, I let it set in water for probably 3 days, used an SOS to no avail. Oh and I always forget and leave the oven cleaner in the oven and then turn on the oven. Yuck
