Default I'm just a milksop I guess

When it really gets down to it and I feel lousy (especially in cold weather) I love to make myself a batch of milk toast. For those who don't know it's simple: First put 4 slices of white bread in toaster and toast (partial cook it and let it cool then toast it to brown later- twice toasted is better);melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a small saucepan. When melted turn burner to high and add 1 1/2 cups milk and salt and pepper. Bring it to a scald and pull it off and pour over the toast til its mostly covered. Sounds soggy but it's good, easy on the system too. Comfort

Last week, I cooked up a huge pot each of two of my favorite comfort food items:

Turkey vegetable rice soup with the leftover TG turkey carcass
Ham 'n' bean soup with the leftover TG ham.

Now I have freezerful of delicious soupy goodness to last me for awhile.

Nothing goes to waste in this house.

Risotto has become one of my favored comfort foods of late. Either with Italian sausage, mushrooms, and peas or shrimp, pancetta, and peas.

Beef shanks also hit the comfort zone on cold, dreary winter days but are best made a day ahead.

Thumbs up Case's Comfort Foods

When it comes to comfort foods, there is no shortage in my life. Chicken-fried steak, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, chicken and dumplings, creamed corn, beef stew, pot roast, pinto beans (I cook mine with pork jowls -- gives them good flavor), ham, butter beans, macaroni & cheese, and cornbread.

Then again, with barbecue being my favorite overall sitdown food, I consider it to be a comfort, too.
