I hate to break it to y'all, but did you know that the "pumpkin" you buy in cans at the grocery store is actually butternut squash? If you've ever tried making pumpkin pie from the real thing, you'll have found that it's a lot stringier and more fibrous than what comes in the cans; that's because what comes in the cans isn't really pumpkin.
That's why I don't use that stuff. Almost everything I cook nowdays comes from scratch. it takes a bit longer, but it tastes soooo much better.
For pie I would use the sweet pie pumpkins, but for pumpkin bread the jack o lantern ones work best.
I cook the pumpkin and then put it in a food processor for a while. it really breaks up those fibers.
Do you have a recipe? I had some at a daycare Halloween party a few years ago and they were soooo yummy!
I love pumpkin muffins. I just made a pumpkin quiche last night--two eggs, some milk (1/2 cup?), s&p, 1 tsp. fresh thyme, and one cup pumpkin mixed all together. Pour it over a pie shell that has 1/2 cup of cheese lining the bottom and bake at 350 for 45-50 minutes. It was easy and good!
Oh there's plenty of other stuff to do with punkins.....Boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew...wait that's Samwise Gamgee's potatoe uses How about target practice....no that's the hunting forum we don't have. Storage for unkeepable wives....oh that may be Peter Pumpkineater's legal advice. Sorry I take it back; there ain't nothin' else to do with 'em
I came across some of the little sugar pie pumpkins today but didnt' buy any just yet. I might should have and may next trip by the fruit stand. I used to raise them and they made the best pies of all. With those I don't remember strings in the flesh. And maybe my wife took it out. That's a long time ago. Hair has change colors since then so who knows now. I do remember the richness of the pies though. As soon as possible they will be planted again. One other dish that we make with pumpkins is pumpkin pie squares. Baically the pie filling in a baking pan covered with some mixture my wife makes with pecans. All of her office parties request it.
