I tend to refrigerate almost everything, including oil. Oil does get rancid, especially sesame oil which I use. I rather be safe than sorry.
So we do keep ketchup in the fridge. I went to my Son's house for dinner, went for it in the pantry. I was reluctant to use it and it was the jumbo bottle, the size that last forever, not refrigerated........lol.
I'll admit that I was one of those people that defrosted meat on the counter or in the sink.
I use to thaw my meat on the counter prior to the "warnings" then I changed afterwards to thawing in the fridge overnight. Now I am in the habit to pull meat from the freezer put it on a plate then in the fridge it goes.
My hot sauces with vinegar stay in the pantry, right alongside the ketchup and mustard
However, my favorite hot sauce, Pico Pica, has no vinegar, so it's in the icebox with the Bubbie's pickles, another product sans vinegar. I'm not a fan of heavily vinegared products.
My Del Monte pickle relish is kept cold, because I believe it says to.
I don't use mayo, but if I did it would likely be in the icebox because that's where dear old Mom kept it.
When I worked in a resturant, we had problems with the ketchup going bad. An expert from the Co came out and finally decided that keeping it in the fridge then taking it out and letting it warm to room temperature, then placing it back in the fridge was what was making it turn. We started keeping it at room temperature all the time and that ended the problem. Apparently the changes in temperature was what made it go bad. I keep my ketchup and other condiments in the fridge and only take them out for meals. I use my oils fairly quickly, so they are on the counter. Peanut butter in the pantry.
I refrigerate almost everything, not peanut butter, potatoes though. Bread I do not, but my mother will freeze bread. I always hated that for some reason.
Because freezer burn tastes awful! I'm with you, gal.
My mother always froze bagels and bread and I am still grossed out by it. The texture and the flavor suffer, even when it is done in freezer bags.
