I think it might be a New England thing. We were from MA and that's how my father liked his apple pie...not melted cheese, but a wedge of white cheddar along side of the pie. It's like when they serve a fruit and cheese course.

I worked in the hotel business for a very long time before staying home with my children. We had a guest who was a frequent long term guest and stayed on the Concierge Level during his time with us. During the Fall Season, he always had a special request for Apple Pie & Cheddar Cheese. It would always even be a topic at our daily meetings about guests arriving that day and we always made sure the Concierge on duty was aware!
He was from PA I believe....

Some 50 years ago I heard for the first time that" A kiss without a squeeze is like apple pie without cheese". It must have been a traditional treat back then. The cheesy pie that is. I prefer vanilla, peach, or butter pecan ice cream on my apple pie. Each to their own. Life is great with apple pie however ya like it.

I was told it is all about point and counter-point - sweet contrasting salty, crunchy contrasting creamy, and richness contrasting sharpness.

I love cheese and fruit as dessert, with a glass of port - Stilton with sliced pears, or Gorgonzola with sliced apples - or just a hunk of Cheddar with a crunchy apple for lunch.

I have made apple pie with a cheddar crust - the cheese mixed into the pastry dough. It was good

My Dad, who's family was from the Albany area, always had a slice of cheddar with his apple pie.

You do realize what this thread has done? It's gone and made it necessary for those of us who've never tried this to do an experiment. Thanks a lot! (really)

hehe!! Well I'm glad I'm not the only one that will be giving it a try because of this thread.

We should do it and compare notes.

I have always preferred cheese on my apple pie. For one thing, ice cream cools down the pie and cheese doesn't but the real issue is that I don't like the excess sweetness of the ice cream. Also, the melted cheese add a nice textural supplement to the pie as well as a taste enhancement. I must confess though, my mom, who was from Boston, was not much of a cheese purist so she always gave us slices of American cheese instead of cheddar. The flavor is less intense, especially for kids, and I guess I just got used to that combo even when I could choose my own cheese.
