Just went to the market and was looking at some fish. The man behind the counter started grabbing at it with his bare hands. I could see a little dirt in his fingernails. I said, "Don't you have to wear gloves when you handle the fish," He said, "We're not required to." And then he said, "So do you want the flounder or Tilapia?" I said, "No thanks," and walked away. I mean, I don't know where his hands have been. Yuck.

When I go to Whole Foods, they always wear gloves in the fish department. I guess I'll only buy my fish at Whole Foods from now on. (Although I can rarely afford it anyway.)

I think you made a wise decision in walking away. I would have too.

You were going to clean it and cook it weren't you. That wasn't dirt anyway, that was organic pre-seasoning

I don't know the atmosphere of the place where you were shopping, but maybe you didn't have confidence? I shopped at the same fishmonger for years and they rarely wore gloves. If they were picking up a ready to cook crab cake, lots of things mixed in, gloves or an implement were used. If they were cleaning, scaling, filleting, they worked in bare hands. They were touching my food with bare hands. They were constantly washing because they always had raw fish on themselves. I was going to wash and cook it before eating it anyway. Perhaps I would feel differently in a supermarket where the guy could have been emptying the trash before serving me.

Gloves only make the fingers not stink like fish.
Any bacteria that gets on the fingers will also get on the gloves.
If the fish are cooked properly, it wont matter either way.

I guess I can see if it was at a fish market - not too many of those around here in the KC area thought

What if it's sushi?
