I'm not the best cook, so I haven't given much in the way of food. I've made jars of scented bath salts and the like. I also made these one year which have been a hit (my stepmom still pulls hers out every year): How to Make a Christmas Potpourri Light | eHow.com

I've received cookies, and Kahlua. I enjoyed both very much. Just stay away from fruitcakes!

Can you tell me about anything you have given or received that you thought especially good?

I love the jam/preserve idea!

Some of my favorites:

shortbread
spicy pecans in a cute Christmas mug
home-roasted coffee in a pretty jar

Had another idea, if you are going somewhere Christmas eve, you could do up a plate of different mini-muffins, so your host would have something for breakfast on Christmas morning.

Those jars look gorgeous! Thanks

Fruitcake - wouldn't dream of making it anyway, no-one likes it, it's too expensive, and I'm too cheap!

Are the lights battery operated? From the pictures I don't see where the cord is? Perhaps the half a bottle of wine I drank last night is affecting my brain this morning. LOL

I bake bunch of cookies every year and also make some fudges and give them as gifts to our neighbors, friends and teachers. They look forward to it every year. I have also received some home made gifts like steak rubs in cute tin, hot cocoa mix, cookies in a jar, etc. I love receiving these gifts.

The instructions direct you to pull a little bit of the cord, and the plug, out of the top so it can be plugged in.

You can also, if you're very handy, drill a hole for it, I think. Me, I'm not that handy. The can go in back, if you're pulling it out from the top. Pull out enough and tie it under some raffia or something that wraps around the lid of the jar, etc.

I appreciate anything from someone's kitchen, but I especially love to get cookies, since cookies are not what I enjoy making. I don't enjoy detail oriented things...like for cookies I need to create dozens of perfect little things when I'd rather make one perfect loaf of bread or a pie.

Oh homemade hot cocoa mix in a tin is cool too. My mother used to make that. That's one where if you include the recipe so they can make it themselves it's really need. It's so much more economical than packets!

And the barbecue rub/mix would be neat too. These are the kinds of things I like. When I was a kid I used to dump spices all together to "cook" when my mother wasn't looking. (An expensive childhood fancy, and I got in a lot of trouble for it.)

These are especially neat because we all spend so much money on prepackaged cocoa or spice rubs, but if you knew a good recipe to make it in bulk, and got that recipe with your gift, it saves you money in the long run. (For those who like to drink cocoa and grill, at least.)

Me too, can't do it for me - but I can do detail for other people!

I was thinking of making 'stained glass' cookies to hang on the tree, can anyone recommend a good hard candy for that - I only made them in the UK before and they don't have the same sweeties here!
