So, I am planning a party and am trying to plan a menu. Can you guys give me your thoughs on it?

It will be for about 40 people. I am planning horsdoeuvres - Mini Beef Wellingtons, goat cheese and red pepper stuffed jumbo mushrooms and onion and grueyere tarts. For the main dinner, it would be a carving station for prime rib, and vegetables with a selection of breads and another station for mashed potatoes - with your choice of what you want with it.

For dessert it would be the birthday cake. It also comes with unlimited soft drinks. There would also be a cash bar for those wanting drinks.

When I discussed the menu with the caterer, I was told this was not enough. My budget is about $30 per person. The horsdoeuvres would be served while the guests are waiting for the suprise person to show up, and then the dinner would be set up after a little bit.

Any ideas, recommendations?

Thanks,

D

You need some sort of vegetarian main course option...a pasta primavera or veggie lasagna or eggplant parmagiana or anything of that ilk.

You might want to include a pasta of some sort for the vegetarians. At least, that's what I was told to do by my wedding caterer Otherwise, it sounds awesome! Those mini beef wellingtons are delicious, and goat cheese is awesome too!

Good point. I will add the eggplant parmesan...but how do I separate it so that only people who dont eat beef can go towards that?

Apart from that, do you think the food looks like it is not enough like the caterer is telling me?

A simple ceasar salad would round out the meal and hopefully not cost too much :-)

I don't know why the caterer says this isn't enough... Does he/she think you need more than one type of meat? I would think adding some sort of vegetarian entree and a salad would cover your bases.

I don't know that there's any way to keep meat-eaters out of the eggplant parmesan in a buffet setting... LOL If the meals were plated it would be easier, but most people assume they can take a bit of everything in a buffet.

do you guys think $30 per person for the type of food I am planning is too ambitious?

Not at all. Especially since the appetizers can be bought at BJ's or Sam's (I know I've seen at least the Wellingtons there), and if you're trying to save money to hit that $30...do it with the birthday cake... you can usually buy a really small gorgeous cake for viewing and then serve sheet cake relatively inexpensively.

That's why I have a front lawn; vegetarians my graze to their heart's content.
