If you had the basic staples such as flour, sugar, butter, milk, cocoa, vinegar and egg and very little else in the kitchen what would make? (You would also have the standard spices.)
a can of corn to add, or a little leftover meat, you could throw together some kind of a chowder.
eggs
pancakes.
Brownies.
wacky cake sometimes known as Vinegar cake
cream puffs/eclairs (if I had some pudding mix) or fill with tuna salad for an entree
homemade noodles
toffee - great if I have a chocolate candy bar and nuts...if I don't --.the toffee is still good, even without them
toffee over saltines makes a great "cookie" especially if you have pecans
pie shell
biscuits
sugar cookies
chocolate pie
wacky cake
chocolate syrup
white gravy
white sauce
creamed tuna on toast if I had tuna and bread in my staples
crepes
scrambled egg sandwich or egg salad, either one, if I have bread
boiled eggs
chocolate gravy and biscuits
roux
flour tortillas
dumplings
German pancakes or Crazy pancakes are a baked pancake made from eggs, flour, sugar, milk, vanilla, salt and butter. sort of like a thick crepe, eggy in flavor but they puff up to yummy goodness. worth trying at least once. Serve with lemon juice and powdered sugar or syrup or jam. all are good. AKA yourshire pudding for English folks out there. the difference is they are baked in butter, not meat drippings)
Yorkshire pudding (same as German pancakes but they are baked in your meat drippings instead of butter!
Quiche - use your onion, shredded carrots and celery in the quiche
Veggie Pot Pie - if you have broth for flaver
Bechamel sauce*
Hot rolls or bread -
Fry bread
Scones
*ADDITIONS TO BECHAMEL:
cheese (Mornay sauce)
shrimp, butter and cream (Nantua sauce)
heavy cream (Crème sauce)
prepared mustard (Mustard sauce)
finely diced onions that have been sweated in butter (Soubise sauce)
(if I had some pudding mix)
If you had the basics you wouldn't need pudding mix. Use the eggs, milk, flour, sugar and vanilla. It's easy and tastes much better than pudding mix!
I have all those things in my kitchen at all times, with the possible exception of cocoa. I don't do desserts too often. I was just cursing the fact that I have a dish in mind for dinner tomorrow that calls for rice wine vinegar. I have white vinegar, white wine vinegar, cider vinegar, red whine vinegar, malt vinegar and even tarragon vinegar....but no rice wine vinegar.
I was going to try a mix of cider and white wine substitute, but I also require fresh ginger and scallions, neither of which I have, so what's one more thing?
