Sugar is now a 4lb bag instead of 5lbs. Bags of chips are noticeably smaller. Lunchmeat is in smaller amounts too. Just about everything.
Went to sam's yesterday to stock up and we always buy our canned goods in bulk. Used to be 12 cans or so in a box now it is only eight. Bummer.
I noticed the sugar thing when I moved to Texas, but my mom tells me sugar in California still comes in 5 pound bags. So I am not sure the reason for the difference in size there.
I probably spend most of my grocery money on fresh fruits and vegetables, at least they haven't gotten smaller!
I am going to go to Sprout's and get a 5 pound sack of oranges for $1!
Packaging is definitely deceptive. For example, I was in the market a few weeks ago and an end cap featured Maxwell House coffee. I didn't buy any, but stopped to look at the sale. All of the plastic containers were the exact same size, but the weight varied by the blend. So if you bought Breakfast Blend, the contents were ~34oz; if you bought Traditional Roast, the contents were ~39oz.
Also, I can't seem to find a one-pound can of anything which makes many of my old(er) recipe books obsolete. Are there more challenges ahead?
Yes and no. The 4# bags that i know of, have always been 4#. I haven't seen any 5# bags decrease down to less than that, but i have noticed the new canister from Domino, which is priced like a 5# bag but only contains 4# of sugar.
I've noticed my granola bars are approximately 1 1/4" or so shorter (same size packaging though). I also noticed one brand, don't recall now, that only has 6 (or 8?) instead of the previous 8 (or 10?).
TP now says "Jumbo" roll so you can't compare per roll pricing so easily.
Poland Spring water, the bottle is ecology friendly now, yeah less water and plastic. Ever notice how the bottoms of the bottles go up underneath.......deception.
I bought Tropicana orange juice this weekend and they changed the look of the packaging but I think they thought that we wouldn't notice that they also changed the amount in the container.
auroranorth we are better off going to the ER with our own drugs such as aspirin advil tylenol prilosec and just pull it out of our own purses....LOL
I get Poland Spring home delivery and they charge I believe it is 8.99 for a case of 24 bottles so it is cheaper to go to the supermarket or Wally World to pick up the bottles.
I will have to check my sugar and flour....I guess the bottom line is everything is changing.
Soda isn't too bad here yet as you can get 3 12 packs of coke, sprite etc for $12.00. It has gone up a bit.

Well that's weird. I have figured out how to get around it, I buy the 10lb bag at sam's. It fills my container all the way. I guess they figure you will buy more sugar if it's only 4lbs?
I have really noticed the ice cream, tuna, sugar, coffee, etc. However, just the other day, I noticed that they are changing the jars of pickles. I usually by the spears, they were a 24 oz jar, new jars are only 17 oz. I am wondering if manufacturers think we are stupid and don't notice~! It is so belittling to the consumer. also, have you noticed the toilet paper? they show us these more bulky rolls, but they are shorter!!!
Dog food. What used to be 50 lb bags are now 37.5 lb bags, though the prices have both stayed the same or gone up. Where I live, if I want to buy a 50 lb bag - which I do, with 3 largish dogs - I have to go to the feed store. And the feed store is considerably cheaper than buying it in the grocery stores anyway.
