The Maid Rite shop (opened in 1924) in Springfield, Illinois and Springfield people always lay claim to being the first to call these Maid Rites, but I have read that Macatine Iowa says they made them first and supposedly one of the ingredients was Pepsi Cola. The Iowa one opened in 1926 which was after the Springfield, Il one. The owner I knew successfully sued the Maid Rite corporation when they opened a new store in Springfield in the mid-90's ....they pulled out of Springfield after losing their lawsuit. They knew the guy in Iowa who claimed to be the first really wasn't the first
to make the sandwich.
I knew the guy who, for years, owned the Springfield Maid Rite and he would never tell me the exact ingredients. I've tried to copy it for years and this is what I do. I use ground round and brown with chopped onions and salt and pepper. In order to make it like Maid Rite does, you must steam the meat. For two pounds of burger I add 2 cans of beef broth to the cooked burger and about 3/4 package of onion soup mix and cook in the crock pot for several hours....adding more beef broth is necessary. If you want it more salty, add some more onion soup mix. I tried adding a bit of pepsi cola a couple of times but I couldn't tell the difference. Always use only Mustard and onions and pickles as toppings....ketchup is a no-no.
Here's a few pictures of the Springfield site:
Is anyone a big fan of these? I've seen the product covered on several TV programs, but never tried one. Since it appears each location is an independent operation, do some turn out better products than others?
Maid-Rite was a MAJOR disappointment. It was like a sloppy joe without the sausage. It was cooked ground beef with absolutely NO flavor.
Now, the pork tenderloin sandwich was quite excellent and one of the best that I have ever tasted.

Just some trivia from a person who has been eating the original Maid Rites for years!!
After writing the above post, I remembered something that the Maid Rite owner told me about why the original owner never used ketchup in his cafe. My friend said that when the Maid Rite store was opened, there were a lot of street bums who could come in with no money to buy anything but the bums would steal the ketchup to take back to their shanties to make tomato soup. So the original owner always said...NO ketchup on my Maid Rites and wouldn't even offer it to customers who asked for it.
I always wondered what Loose meat sandwiches were, exactly. Thanks for the info. It must be a Midwestern thing. We've never heard of it down in Texas, although I remember "Roseanne" and her TV sister Jackie owned one in her show.
There would be a lot of off color jokes by rednecks down here if we had places that sold loose meat. Just sayin'!

I was just going to post the exact same thing. Only time I have ever heard of loose meat sandwiches were from Roseanne. I totally want to try one though.
Contrary to popular belief, the first Maid-Rite opened in Marshalltown, IA and while I have tried these "authentic Maid-Rites" everywhere else, The one in Marshalltown is by far the best! I am addicted to these things! They also have awesome shakes, and delicious pies! Forewarning: DO NOT EAT THE RAISIN CREAM PIE! nasty...
