For some it takes getting use to. It grows on you. Not everyone is instantly in love with the sweetness....but with time most will crave it!

This southerner thinks it can be way too sweet...I actually prefer my ice tea unsweetened as do my parents and other family members.

Sweet tea is not quite like just regular old iced tea. Its iced and tea, but its very very sweet and flavored. I haven't made any, but you'll know it when you taste it.

Many restaurants in the South assume that you want sweet tea if you order an iced tea- but many will ask if yo want "sweet " or "unsweetened".

Sadly, I think we may only keep Splenda in our house...so I may have to run to the store before trying this.
Authentic sweet tea is made with sugar - no substitutions. I like it at some restaurants, but in others, it's too sugary.

I'm originally from Texas, where sweet tea is not a staple, but iced tea is. I always sweetened my iced tea - first with Equal, then I switched to Splenda.

As much as I love sweet tea, I make something a little different at home. I buy loose tea from Adagio (strawberry flavored is my favorite), and brew in an Iced Tea Pot from Mr. Coffee. I put a little less than a cup of Splenda over the ice in the pitcher before brewing, and it comes out perfect.

I love sweet tea!! I make 2 gallons at a time.

This is my recipe...

3 Tetley Ice Tea Blend Tea Bags
a good size sauce pan (I guess a 3 to 5 qt??) <-- I have a favorite pan but don't know the size of it.
2 to 2 1/2 cups of sugar (I don't measure it)
2 Gallon Tea Pitchers

Fill sauce pan to about 3/4th's full add tea bags turn stove on. Get it to almost boiling (you can let it briefly boil for about 5-10 seconds and it will be ok.) and turn off. Get your tea pitchers and add the sugar into one of them pour the tea into the pitcher you put the sugar in. Stir until dissolved. Then split the tea equally between both pitchers. Add ice to both pitchers when the sugar/tea mixture has cooled add water to the rest of both. Mix throughly.

After this you can drink it but I recommend putting it in the fridge to have the favor come together better. It's better the older it gets. Oh and it starts out mildly sweet but as it get colder and ages the sweetness increases. I only use Tetley Tea. I don't care for the other tea brands out there.

And for those in TX it tastes like Bill Millers Tea.

iced tea is a southern tradition. they put a lot of sugar in it.
always ask for it unsweetened, then sweeten to taste. they put a lot of fat and sugar in their
food, but southerners have no monopoly on sugar and fat intake.
(do i sound defensive)
anyway that is the skinny on sweet tea.

nada, no, never, nope, forget about such!!! Sweetening unsweet tea is NOT the same as real sweet tea.
Sweet tea is a smooth, refreshing elixer - sweetened unsweet tea is a battle, a rough textured drink, tasting more like coloured water w/ some sugar added.
Of course, this is IMHO, and via a person that has an addiction to such...

I LOVE my sweet tea but I enjoy a glass of unsweetened tea too! I can take it either way. (Am I a disgrace to the sunny south?)
