I agree that some of the wrapped kind is not the same. Its more Velveeta-like. I have found that SOME of the wrapped American cheese slices taste just as good as the deli type. Really.

It's pretty much the same as Canadian cheese, Buy Kraft Canadian Slices in a Toronto supermarket, and you won't be able to tell the difference.

AC (white) has found a home in a philly cheese steak ,from Philly (PA, USA). It just works.
Now Cheese Whiz (another popular Philly cheese steak topping, is subject for another thread...

not my first pick for cheese but I don't hate it. If I had another cheese choice I'd pick cheddar, provolone, Swiss or muenster.

I was going to bring this up, too- I grew up with white American cheese and always preferred it. Moved to the west coast and it was nowhere to be found. In the midwest I found it at a Walmart a few years ago, but haven't seen it since. The closest I've found lately is Queso Blanco- I think Kraft makes it- but there's something about the taste that makes it different from basic white American cheese.

Also, personally, I don't see any diff between sliced and deli- other than the price tag.

I stopped buying the stuff in plastic wrappers it's really not that good. I buy fresh deli sliced American. It's hubby's favorite but then again he's like a mouse. He loves all cheeses except Limburger ( boy that stinks bad)

I buy American cheese slices once every couple of years when I get a hankering for childhood foods like simple grilled cheese (with a side of tomato soup!) and cheese and mayo on white bread. I almost never make omelets but I'm not opposed to American cheese in them; it can be just the right creaminess to melt into the eggs. I guess I'm a cheese snob cause I haven't touched canned Parmesan or Cheez-Whiz in years.

I much prefer good cheddar (tillamook is a fave) but its expensive so much of the time my family and I go with kraft (or if I'm shopping a store brand) of american cheese for most things you know like grilled cheese burgers sandwhiches etc. but yeah its mostly a budget thing if I could go with quality cheese all the time I absolutely would.
