I don't remember anything special - other than Grandma K had a great hand with tomato, onion, cucumber in vinegar salad.

I do remember a potato/leak soup that Grandma H made that was very good. We lived with Grandma H when we first moved to Jonesville - and she always made me a scrambled egg on toast sandwich for breakfast every school day. I still like that for breakfast.

Although I didn't spend lots of time with them (they lived in Arizona - I lived outside of Chicago), my dad's parents - particularly my Papa - had a wonderful thing he used to make that I've been trying to duplicate for years, unsuccessfully. It's a baked spaghetti with some kind of white sauce, lots of cheese - I can't explain it, I haven't seen the right recipe yet, I've tried numerous things - and I think I started a thread about it around here somewhere.

Anyway, I miss that dish more than any other. And I miss my Papa, too...

Polish grandma - crusciki, nut roll.

Italian grandma - cappelletti in broth. She also made a vinaigrette that I've been trying to duplicate for the 25 years since she passed. I wish I'd have asked her about it when she was alive.

That really made me think. Another generation is being born lately in our extended family, and the generation before that is getting married (we do stuff in reverse sometimes) and I think it's time the grandmothers (and aunts, and uncles, and etc. and etc.) all do our best to get together and get some kind of cookbook together - there are a lot of family recipes that are going to go by the wayside unless we do and that would be a crying shame. Some of them were brought over on the boats that brought our people many, many MANY years ago.

Time to call my Sister in Law - she and I could be ALL over this! I did a very small scale one for just my direct family, but now, our families are very intertwined - let's include 'em all!
