For sure it is not just regular tea with sugar in it. I've been drinking tea all my life and since moving to the South, I had not discovered this type of tea. It has a distinct taste and "texture" for sure.
I just made a fresh pitcher of Luzianne, and I got it pretty darn cold with ice cubes. It tasted might good with a plate of pintos and a slab of cornbread right out of the oven BTW, I'm a real southener who likes his tea about half as sweet as most. I usually order it way, and it's just right
Put 1/4 cup sugar (more or less to your personal taste) in a quart of water. Bring to a boil and simmer until you can see a shimmering layer of dissolved sugar. Turn the water off and add enough teabags to make a gallon of tea. Steep until strong, 5 minutes or so. (You'll be diluting it.)
Once it's steeped, put the tea into a gallon container containing ice cubes (empty a tray in there). Then fill with water to make a gallon of tea.
Chill until icy cold, then serve over ice.
Poggly Woggly, you say you order it half as sweet - do they brew it up special for you at restaurants? Or are you having them mix sweet tea and unsweetened tea to taste? (That's what my daughter does, half and half, and it's perfect for her.)

Good recipe. except for the ice part. Sometimes I do serve my tea over ice. Preferrably, I like it without ice because I get a stronger taste in the tea. I like putting it in the ice box until its very cold.
I have my own variant of sweet tea(I typically use green tea).

You sure you're from the south? My husband's family puts two cups to every gallon. Diabetic coma for sure.
Too much sugar keeps it from feeling cold. I drink mine unsweet, so I wouldn't be able to tell you. My favorite is half and half, but I can't take all the sugar..gives me a headache.
No, I'm not from the South, I'm from Texas. Which is closer to Southwest, but really is just Texas.
But 1/4 cup is the minimum - you can go up from there, if you want. I've experimented and found that that ratio is just about perfect when you come in from a long, hot day of putting up bales of hay in the barn on a day when it's 108 degrees - most restorative thing you can drink.
