I figure it is like helping those who are helping themselves.... Charity to those who deserve it.... I am not saying a tip is charity just that I tip extra with that mindset.

Charity was the wrong word... The normal tip is deserved and the extra is
my way of helping students and others who are working hard...we know most of our wait people and many are hard working students..so I like
over tipping to help...
none have complained that it is inappropriate yet... LOL...
You should only not leave a tip when you get crappy service and if the food is bad then you should complain to the manager and let him or her know why you are unhappy . If you dont leave a tip then you are saying to the waiter or waitress the bad food was her fault .
Moderator cut: deleted waiting tables. Tried that for 6 days. My horror story and breaking point was when I was bringing a family their food-the father was a complete jerk from the get-go and when I set his plate down an olive rolled of it and onto the table. He started screaming at me, "You stupid Moderator cut: deleted , why don't you do something useful for us and go get hit by a car and die!" Right in front of his kids-and this was at an upscale, fancy restaurant! I told him what he could do with that olive and walked off the job.
I've worked in kitchens with ovens blasting out over 500 degrees of heat at me, I've cleaned poop from cages while working at an animal shelter. Those 6 days of waitressing were the worst job I've ever had.
I always tip, and I tip well-unless the server was really lousy. I can't recall ever stiffing someone.
I think that people who don't tip have probably never had to work hard for anything before, and they have no concept of how hard work serving is. And dealing with people in general.
This was two years ago-hourly wages were around $2.15.

I usually dine all by my lonesome and order a simple meal with ice water, not much service is expected, just bring my food promptly and Im done eating in around 10 minutes, sometimes I dont leave any tips, especially if the food was sub standard and I dont plan on comming back.
Never. I'll leave a tip even if the service sucked. In the spirit of "commit a random act of kindness" or whatever, or "I don't suck as much as you do!" LOL!
Also, I absolutely never punish the waiter/waitress for errors that are the restaurants. Working for tips (except in places that happen to be booming at the moment or have a steady stream, like Vegas Casinos) sucks. I'm empathetic to that, having seen bad times myself.
i never have failed to leave a tip. on one occasion, i left a penny for a waiter who failed to insure proper service. the other person w/ me, left 12%, of which i contributed 6%. our interest was to teach the server about the purpose of a tip and about his failure of doing an acceptable job. the few times i experienced his service afterwards was very pleasant.
on another occasion, i, along w/ four others, was in a decent restaurant in downtown paducha, ky. we arrived about twenty of six in the evening. the wait was quite long, therefore, we ordered cocktails. service was slow at the bar, but eventually we got our martinis. before we finished them, we were called to our table. after being seated for over twenty minutes w/out attention, we called for a floor manager. soon after, a female server arrived to take our appetizer order---she quickly told us that the kitchen was "terrible backed up" and she could take only appetizer orders initially. we ordered appetizers w/out a fuss. they arrived about fourty-five minutes later---cold, greasey, and unacceptable. nevertheless, we made no fuss. at approximately eight-thirty, we were able to place our dinner order. nothing elaborate. steaks, crab cakes, roasted chicken half, and two orders of stuffed pork chops. the dinners arrived at approximately a quarter of ten. the server, at the point the dinner was brought to the table, had been to our table twice: to take the order and to bring the dinner. the appetizers were eventually delivered by a bus boy, who told us he was doing a favor for the server. he could not bring us our wine. obviously, the food was a diaster. the server did not knew, as she never returned to the table to bring the wine or to ascertain wheather the food was decent or not.
the check, which had been delivered upon the arrival of our meal, was discussed by the diners, and i left a 12% gratuity, the other three diners left 10%, 12%, and, at the time we left the table, one of the diners left an undisclosed amount. we found out---on the street---that he had left the server a sum of one dollar. for the service we received, this server hit pay dirt.
when she realized that we had paid the cashier/hostess and she knew that someone had left her the dollar tip, the server came from the resaurant and from behind us on to the street, where we were watching some street dancing and fireworks. the server, for some unknown reason, confronted me w/ her displeasure over her dollar tip and tried to put a wadded up one dollar bill into my front shirt pocket. she yelled out publicly, "you obviously need this more than i do!" usually, i would never take up an issue, particularly in a forum like a public street; however, i had been pushed to my limit. i, along w/ my party, quickly returned to the restaurant. when i summoned the night manager, he informed me that the owner of the establishment was on the premises, and he suggested that i take up my displeasure w/ him. that, i did. the owner informed us that the girl had behaved in this manner on a few other occasions. although i did not think of the girl's dismissal, that is exactly what happened to her. that is the closest i have ever come to slapping a female. i told the owner that the server was lucky to have her teeth, after being so bold as to put her hands on my person. in retrospect, it was best for all
concerned. needless to say, i was annoyed w/ the fellow who left the one dollar---it was a pretty long drive to the house.
by and large, i make it a point to leave a tip of about 21%. i am always appreciative of the barmaids who know my little idiosyncracies. that gets them a little bit more, after a very good martini or two.
