Hello, how is everyone today? I am curious about Cajun food. I've not had any experience with Cajun food except for Popeye's and Bojangle's, which I love (Bojangle's is my favourite by far), but I'm not sure if that is even considered Cajun food or if it's no more like real traditional Cajun food than Taco Bell is like real traditional Mexican/Tex Mex food lol. I've been reading in the different forums and there have been many references to Cajuns and the Cajun influence/culture in places such as Louisiana and parts of East Texas. So, it got me to thinking how when ever I hear or think of Cajun I automatically think about food! So basically, I have two questions that I can think of straight away: Is it normal and/or common to automatically think of food when I hear or think of the word Cajun? My second question is what are some Cajun foods and Cajun styles of cooking/seasoning etc? It also would be cool if people share their favourite food as well. So far I only know of dirty rice (which I've not had yet) and Bojangle's (delicious) spicy chicken biscuits, seasoned french fries. Thank you in advance for everyone's time and input!

Not weird at all to me lol! It's pretty awesome though that the first person to reply to my post seems to share my sense of humour! You made me think of that show Gator Boys or something like that.

In my mind I tend to combine Cajun with Creole food and think of things like etouffee, gumbo, crawfish pie, jambalaya and shrimp Creole. For spice I think of cayenne pepper, along with bell peppers and onions.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Creole! I'm so hungry now! I don't think I've ever had any of those foods except for onions but it still sounds good. I've had shrimp but not sure if it were Creole. I love trying new and different foods. I can be a little bit picky sometimes but I think that I'm better at eating a wider variety now. I figured that Bojangle's may not be authentic but I still love it and I have a feeling that I would like more Cajun food if I try it. I just have to have plenty of cold drinks to wash it down with!

You never had green (bell) peppers?

I make shrimp Creole fairly often. I posted my recipe here.

Oh ok, actually I think that I may have had those before after all. Most recently at Olive Garden, at least I think that's what they put on their pizzas. I LOVE their pizzas and breadsticks! I'm not entirely sure but if not at Olive Garden I probably have had them before at some point, just not sure exactly when and where (unless Olive Garden counts).

I think it's perfectly normal to think of food when you think Cajun. They love to party, and their celebrations often center around food. Crawfish and gumbo usually come to mind first when I think of Cajun food. Do a search for Crawfish Monica. That's usually a staple at their festivals.

When I think Cajun seasonings, I think Tony Chachere's and the trinity (onion, bell peppers, and celery). They do a lot of blackened fish too.

Crawfish boil! Sadly no one here does this, and when I mention it, everyone says EW. I make the best Jambalaya this side of the Continental Divide too, that and some hot water cornbread. Good eats!
