the era you are talking about was Milk at every meal. The suggestion was a qt of milk a day for each person, especially children and was before the days of lower fat milk. Well they did have some skim milk, but we all called it blue milk and no one would drink it or at least would not admit to drinking it.

When I was a kid in the 70s and 80s, there was certainly a stigma against skim milk and I commonly heard people disparaging it. Then, as the low-fat diet fad of the late 80s and 90s really took hold, skim milk became really popular to the point where people would caution you if you mentioned that you preferred whole milk.

There does seem to be a reversal of that trend recently.

There was a milk craze. Told if we didn't drink enough we'd have calcium problems. I could have milk or tea or water. I love milk, but not with a meat meal, as you said. With breakfast or certain other things.

I watched an old movie the other day .... the 40's I guess? and the whole family was drinking milk with their roast or whatever. Weird, to me.

Anyway it's a good source of protein and fat and vitamins. Especially whole. The particular fats in milk specifically break down and allow your body to utilize the good stuff in it
