It's bad that I like skim milk, isn't it? *hangs head in shame and whispers "I just don't like the fat"*

My son's father, on the other hand, will use real cream like milk- on his cereal, even DRINK it. That just grosses me out- it's SO thick! I should have known early on that relationship wasn't meant to last! LOL.

I didn't grow up with milk at any meals really, probably only had it as an infant. Don't really like it now. I do like it in cereal. Chocolate milk is okay any time! I drink water all day and with every meal. I don't even like juice - I'm weird! It's not even necessarily a health thing, I just don't like sweet drinks, they don't taste good to me. No soda either. Maybe a sip of hubby's every now and then. Pepsi does go good with pizza! I can never finish a whole can or bottle of soda though but sips are nice here and there

LOL it's not bad.

My 2 girls do NOT like whole milk. They say it tastes funny. I can't bring it in the house though, b/c my son will drink it all in one day. He LOVES the stuff.

Kids now days drink soda with every meal...

And consider how many kids nowadays are unhealthy, fat, out of shape and hyperactive vs those of us who grew up where soda was a once in a while treat. Shoot, I was lucky if I got to have a tiny glass of my mom's Purple Nehi Soda once a month lol.

I've read that milk consumption, after infancy, is pretty much a phenomenon of northern and western Europe, and people who descend from those regions.

According to Wikipedia, the top countries that consume milk are all the Scandinavian countries. I guess that makes sense: milk can stay fresher longer in colder climates (like Scandinavia), in slightly warmer climates (France, Spain) people had to put their milk into more stable forms, like cheese, that could stay edible longer than liquid milk. But when you get to Tropical climates, without modern refrigeration, you have little hope of keeping dairy products cool enough to be edible.

Many people from East Asia, Africa, and even Southern/Mediteranean Europe don't have the enzymes to digest milk by the time they reach adulthood (hence the huge amount of people who are lactose intolerant). In southern European places like Spain, Italy, Greece, they still eat a lot of cheese, so they do get dairy; they just don't really drink milk. But when you look at east Asia, they eat very little if any dairy.

I'm American, but my ancestors were from England, Sweden, and Germany, and surprise, my family drinks a lot of milk.

I agree soda should be a once in a while thing. It's ironic that ounce for ounce, coke has fewer calories and far less fat and cholesterol than milk. Milk does have protein, calcium, and vitamins that soda lacks, and some nutritionists believe milk actually helps lower "bad cholesterol" levels. Of course, the protein helps build muscle, which in turn burns more calories.

Then on the other hand, you have some out there who believe milk is bad for you, full of hormones and antibiotics, and too high in fat for adults. I tend to believe milk is okay, but since I'm lactose intolerant I don't drink it by the glass.

But it's interesting that a 12 ounce glass of 2% milk has 195 calories and 7.5 grams of fat, compared to 135 calories and no fat for a Coke.

I grew up drinking milk with every meal. I've some Hispanic friends who give their kids coffee at a young age, not at every meal though. My kids drank skim milk at every meal. For years I bought different brands of skim milk but now that I found organic, I never have that strange taste from the plastic or maybe from any kind of milk that isn't organic. Organic has the pure taste of milk.

Funny I drink milk a lot, but usually not with meals. I sometimes drink a glass of milk with a snack. As Ms Crabcakes mentioned, usually I drink milk with a sweet snack. Or sometimes, I drink it with spicy food.

I did eat salmon last night and I drank milk with dinner. LOL

Um, when we were young we drank juice with meals. Now we usu drink wine, esp with dinner. I seem to recall that we used milk mostly for things like cereal and porridge, not as a drink by itself.

Got milk?
Milk does a body good!
Drink milk for strong bones and strong teeth! ---Advertising works!

As a child, I hated milk--My mother bought raw milk from a local farmer, removed the cream from the top AND sent in plastic containers for our school lunches. By noon, it was warm and yucky. --We poured it out.

But, I remember lots of TV ads in the '50's, 60's, 70's, etc. encouraging milk consumption, probably all sponsored by the American Dairy Association. Now there is a certain amount of controversy over the health benefits of milk. I have no opinion on this because I eat cheese!
