OK, I had to ask this cause I think this is the oddest thing.
Last time I had dinner over my mom-in-law's we had a corned beef and potatoes meal (typical Irish dinner) and afterwards, she offered me some milk. I was weirded out by it cause I've never drank milk after dinner and certainly not after a meat meal. Turns out my fiance grew up drinking milk with EVERY meal, no matter what he ate. We were talking about this today and I think it is so gross! So after dinner, even if he had steak or something hearty; a glass of milk?! He says its normal but I have never heard of anyone drinking milk all day like that.
I usually drink milk with breakfast but only with a sweet meal like pancakes, french toast or waffles.
So after speaking with some friends about this it seems like it may have been more common in white families but not for black/latino families. Growing up I never knew any kids (I only knew black kids) that even drank plain white milk.
Location: Finally made it to Florida and lovin' every minute!

Hm. Interesting. I grew up in an all white, northern small town. Do you think it might have had anything to do with climate? We were allowed iced tea in the summertime when we were kids, but we never drank it in the winter.
I believe my choices for dinner included milk, hot tea...or water. My mother was never into kool-aid or other sweetened drinks (though we did have iced tea in the summer), and orange juice doesn't "go" with a lot of meals either... So it's not odd to me that most meals, one would be offered milk (I did have a friend that always had it with pizza, though...that's kinda weird..). What IS odd, is that it would be offered after the meal...like a dessert? Hmm....
I read about it in Heidi and Little House on the Prairie. I didn't grow up doing it though. We had kool aid, water, sweet tea, water, soda or water, lol. We're African-American. My mom's from the Arkansas and Texas.
I'm not much of a milk drinker - my sister is a milk fiend. I think we usually had water with our meals - maybe juice with breakfast, very rarely pop. I think we could choose what we drank and didn't have to have this or that.
However, my mom hates milk because, when she was a little girl in the 1930s, she had to drink a quart of milk a day. That wasn't necessarily with meals, though.
Not sure about the white/black thing and if that or other regional differences (like north/south) have anything to do with milk habits. I do have a friend who hates milk and ice cream because her parents drank lots of milk and had ice cream for dessert every night. I'm white, she's black. <shrug>?

I agree.
I grew up having milk with every meal, but only drink it in coffee now, and not very much. (I lived on both coasts and in Colorado, my parents were from NY and Colorado.)
Soda or kool-aid was a special treat for us--my mom did not approve of sugary beverages.
My husband (from the midwest) is 56 years old (we're white) and he still likes his milk with every meal. He'll even be having a glass of wine and put it aside during dinnertime so he can have his milk!
Milk with everything growing up.... Irish Potato here..... from Western NY.... just weighing in (if anyone didn't drink milk they had water btw)
