If you are having a salad at home, do you eat it before, during, or after dinner? I saw a comment on another thread about Americans always eating salads before dinner, which got me wondering.

For us, if we are having a salad, we have it during dinner, unless we go out to a restaurant. But the poll is for what you do when you are at home.

I voted Before since that's customary here and that what my DH prefers. Me, I would rather eat it during or after. I used to love to snack on leftover salads while cleaning up from dinner.

If it's at home, like you're asking, I eat it during dinner. But eating out would be before dinner.

Usually during. If I don't want to mix the main dish with my salad (e.g., tomato sauce), I'll eat it afterward.

A remnant of my Hungarian upbringing, salad is consumed as an accompaniment to the main dish. Even at restaurants I will eat my salad with dinner. I've never had any servers complain about it either, thankfully.

I usually eat a salad before my dinner meal, but growing up we always had a salad after our meal...

Before. I love salad and as an added bonus it helps cut down on my appetite so I don't eat as much other stuff.

I remember being told as a child that eating salad before dinner was "California style". We always had salad first- and had salad with every meal. I eat it with dinner now, though.

Ditto.

But I don't like to fill up on salad in a restaurant so I'll move the plate over to the side to nibble on with my main course.

Why are waiters so anxious to take away my salad? Even after I tell them I want to keep it they'll ask if they can remove "that plate" when they refill the beverages. I don't believe in slapping hands but a couple of times I was pretty sure that was what it would take.
