two different regions, but which one do you think is a better grocery store, quality wise, price wise, environment wise etc.

I work for a company that assists Publix with staffing. Judging by the people they hire, I will go with Safeway

I haven't seen a Safeway in years. Where are they?

Some idiot named their store Publix? Is that where people buy "x-treme" groceries?

They're mostly in the Western half of the country. There's a ton of Safeways in the Pac-NW. Keep in mind Vons is also owned and operated under Safeway.

There are Safeway Grocery stores in Indianapolis, but I suspect they are not related to the larger Safeway chain.

Publix. I've had lots of experience with both. Safeways tend to be too overpriced and sometimes their selection is sketchy. Publix, to me, has the best all-around balance amongst cost-quality-value, selection, cleanliness, attractiveness, and service.

Safeway is located throughout the mid-Atlantic (DC area), portions of the Central US, Northwest US, Western Canada, Northern California (especially the San Francisco area), and into portions of the Southwest US.

I greatly prefer Safeway to Publix. Many Safeway's have a very nice selection, though their products are quite pricey. Many of the employees of Safeway are very attentive, friendly, and helpful. Also, many Safeway's are open 24 hours, which is very convenient if you don't live near a Wal-Mart Supercenter.

Didn't know that about Von's...

Safeway is also in Western Canada - I've been to Safeways in BC and in Edmonton, Alberta.
