Its 3 pm and someone knocks on your door, you have some things in the fridge for your unexpected guests. What do you offer them?

I always have the makings for a pasta dish, salad and fresh fruit salad, cheeses and crackers.

Pasta-I have makings for linguine w/white clam sauce, fettucine alfredo, pasta carbonara, marinara. Frozen scallops, shrimp-which can be thawed quickly-so scampi.

Always have crusty Italian bread in the freezer.

Plenty of choices in the alcohol dept.

If all else fails-call for pizza.

A couple of different cheeses, crackers, olives, and sardines, along with mustard and cocktails. And/or hummus if I have any left.

Since it's summer, I would offer cold drinks (iced tea and lemonade), chips and dip, cheese and crackers, and angel food cake with blueberries, strawberries, and whipped cream. There are also frozen appetizers that are good. I keep these types of things in the house just for that reason.

Also I always have large cans of tuna in the refrig-so I can whip up and fast cold mac/tuna salad.

I've learned over the years not to stress stuff like that and just relax and enjoy.

If I wasn't expecting anybody I probably won't even go to the door to see who it is. Yes. Seriously.

If I wasn't expecting anyone, I wouldn't open the door either. But if they call on the phone and say, "Hey, your car's in the driveway, I know you're probably in there somewhere..."

I have some leftover chili and could serve that with toppings and sides. How about ham and swiss cheese sandwiches with some slaw on the side or burgers on the grill. Maybe chips, pretzels and veg with salsa, dips. Cheddar and multi-grain crackers and cold shrimp? I also have watermelon, cantelope and blueberries; I could do something with that. Hold on, there's a pint of Cherry Garcia in the freezer! I rather like to while away some time visiting and presenting a snack parade.

That's it-just relax and put out what you have and don't kill yourself.

I always have ingredients for margaritas lying around in the summer. I'd rather drink my calories!
