I rarely find ripe fruit at the supermarket. It is usually imported from across the country; i.e., California, and bred to be sturdy for shipping, which means tasteless and unripe.
There are exceptions, like apples, which travel well, but I would likely never buy something like a cantaloupe at a supermarket, only a farm stand or farmer's market where you can get local produce.
Pineapples, of course, are another exception, as nobody in NJ or most other states outside of Hawaii grows pineapples, lol. Oranges and grapefruits also ship well, so you can find good ones at the supermarket.
Supermarket plums and peaches are rarely any good at all. Baseballs.
