We have ordered a bread machine this week-end, we are expecting it later this week. Can't wait to have it!

Well, after college I went through a period of unemployment and decided to set in store a staple food in case I didn't find work before my money ran out. I ended up making a couple of loaves a day for 6 months from ~2.5 cups of flour, tsp. salt, tbs. yeast and a couple tsp. oil.

Here is what 6 months of ingredients cost:

50 lb. sack of flour - $8.00
2.5 lb. baker's yeast - $4.00
1 lb. salt - $1.50
1 gallon olive oil -$17.00 (regular veg. oil would have been 1/2 the cost but I splurged)

So for a total cost of $30.50 I made an amount of bread that at retail cost (~$3.00/loaf) would have been about $1,080.

I saved well over a thousand dollars in a 6 month period.
The trick is to buy your ingredients in bulk, ESPECIALLY yeast. The markup on small yeast packages or even those little jars is astronomical.

Also, I didn't use a breadmaker. After 6 months I could crack a 2x4 in half with my bare hands. I could also deflect bullets with my forearms. :-)
