I think it's the taking time out to relax bit that's the main factor. You stop what you're doing that's stressing you out, make your tea, then you have to sit down and drink it. And it's nice and warm and soothing.
Perhaps not so much in North American culture, but any place with British inflluence, like Australia here, "having a cuppa" is associated with relaxation and de-stressing. You'll be told to sit down while somebody (often your mum, auntie or grandmother) makes you a cuppa and then you'll have to tell them all about it. And that's what's often missing in modern society - the combination of stopping, relaxing and talking about your problems.
Even if you're alone, because of that association, you just tend to stop and a have a think. And that's often quite settling. Along with a nice warm tummy. Works for me
