I sniff it, look at it, even poke at it with clean hands.

If it passes all those tests, I'll eat it.

I have a question though. I've heard that large families have a hard time keeping in stock of food, not having to worry that it goes bad. Like...4 kids, go through a gallon a day, So one buys a few gallons and once, but in a few days, it's all gone and you have to buy more. How are you having to worry about dates?

Two teenagers go through a gallon a day here. A whole jar of peanut butter, whole loaf of bread... I could go on.

Now with the smaller frig in the RV, I need to learn to not buy so much at one time, but I am cleaning it out every few days, or when I run out of plastic containers...
I've bought turkey breast from a deli. Looked fine, smelled fine, but it had a slimy feel to it. In only two days, it had gone bad.

Leftovers I don't keep more than 2 days.

But I normally buy stuff that is a long ways from expiring. But I do eat or drink them before they do.

I have three teenagers, so I know this reality! I can't keep food in the house, especially my oldest two boys...17 and 16. My 13 year old hasn't started his growth spurt...but my older ones have a bottomless pit in their stomach...cereal, bread, peanutbutter, milk...you name it....G..O...N....E!

I rarely toss food, very little food waste in our home.

Ill cut around a questionable part of a pepper, potato etc.

Bread, OJ, Soymilk etc. really does not go bad here as I think I have finally perfected the right amount of packaged foods to have in the house at a time.
