I remember being told as a child that eating salad before dinner was "California style". We always had salad first- and had salad with every meal. I eat it with dinner now, though.
I grew up on "California style" in CA. I always assumed it meant that the only green thing you would see during your dining experience was that little dish of lettuce you got as part of the Combo at Bob's Big Boy.

I prefer to eat mine before the main meal.
That way, it keeps me from overeating and being too stuffed (especially when I go out, I hate feeling bloated and tired when I go out so I eat the salad first before the meal). But when I do go out I normally just order an appetizer and eat the salad first, because I'll be too stuffed to eat a larger meal. So, it all works out well and saves some money too.
I've just finished a delicious dinner that included a salad. At home, I eat salad with the meal. My mother loved salad with the dinner and prefered this anytime she ate, including dining out. Mother used Dew Drop's strategy often. I can just see her telling them to please leave the salad because she isn't finished! She would have been thrilled to know she was so "European" (re the Hungarian style referred to by another poster).
I always eat my salad before a meal at restaurants (b/c that's usually when it is offered) and after dinner at home; I also need to *always* eat it on a separate plate (i.e. not my dinner plate).
Usually before dinner. I put everything in my salad but the kitchen sink, by the time dinner comes, the salad fills me up. In Restaurant's eating a good salad before dinner, usually does fill me up with the delicious bread or rolls that are served. Any one put hard boiled eggs in their sald. Just curious. The Restaurants do seem to remove your salad plates quite fast. Some nights we just have for dinner a huge salad, with everything in it, lettuce, fresh spinich, green onions, red onions, celery, carrots, cucumbers, fresh mushrooms, brocolli, fresh tomatoes, purple cabbage, chicken grilled, hard boiled eggs, crumbled bacon bits, not always, shredded cheddar cheese, croutons, and the dressing. It does fill you up. I ususally make a garlic toast, or home made cheddar cheese bisquits. Sounds good, think i will make a salad tonight.
