For those of you going to a restaurant for Valentine's Day I'm wondering if you plan to have a dinner from a prix fixe menu or if you'll order a la carte?

I started investigating restaurants around town and the most expensive prix fixe menu was for $250 per person on Sunday (they only charged $135 per person for the same menu on Friday and Saturday - shaved truffles are included on some of the dishes Sunday that's the difference in price). It's a Michelin two star restaurant.

Is it my imagination or are restaurants really soaking diners on Valentine's day?

$250 per person!? That better be some damn good food! I'm sure that Valentine's Day is a great holiday for restaurants. I don't see how they can jack their prices up so much compared to what it regularly is though.. that is ridiculous.

No eating out for us. I will probably just cook a nice meal.

I think we'll be steaming some crab legs from a grocery store and getting some kind of dessert from an upscale bakery.

Go for lunch not dinner. This is great to do when you have school aged kids when Valentine's falls on a weekday. Usually the kids still have all of their regular activities that afternoon/evening even though it is Valentine's Day. So you might not be able to have a nice couples dinner out unless you can arrange someone to take care of the kids. This saves on babysitting as well. The restaurants don't have the fixed menus for lunch and you do not need reservations. You can get into any restaurant that is open for lunch and save a ton and still get a nice meal w/o the kiddo's.

We've never eaten out on Valentine''s (or Mother's Day,Easter, etc) because you are a "target" for over priced substandard food.

We've always made something very special and enjoyed it at home in a romantic setting and did it for a lot less.

Same here as Lacey, our son was the head chef at a Gourmet rest. in a shore location and always said it was such a rip off to go out on those holidays and the want you in and out and not to linger. V. D. I will be making lobster tails, NY strip steak, baked ptotatoes and a nice salad, it it is well below $500 for the two of us.

We usually make a nice dinner at home on Valentine's Day (and New Year's Eve as well), but this Valentine's we're going out.

BUT...

1. We're going on Friday so that we don't have to be in a crowd on Sunday.

2. We're going to a new(ish) local sushi restaurant for which we have a coupon.

Yeah, that doesn't sound romantic at all. But whatever. I guess if I don't mind, my husband won't either.

We'll be going to my mother's favorite coffee shop, since the 14th is her 89th birthday!

The restaurant I found isn't too expensive, but the earlier reservations were all booked so we're having dinner on Saturday at 9:15pm...

Oh my gosh, I feel old beyond my 44 years. By 9.15pm, I've walked the dog and gone to bed for the night. I'm up by 5.00am, but still...

Happy Valentine's Day!
